The New Jersey Commission on Higher Education convened
at the Mary G. Roebling Building in Trenton on September 24, 2007.
Chairman Laurence Downes presided. Highlights from the meeting
include:

Swearing-In of New Members: Mr. Guillermo Gonzalez from Seton Hall
University and Ms. Liebnitz Martinez-Goldsmith from Union
County College were sworn in as new student members of the Commission.

Executive Director’s Report: Ms. Oates commented on her Capital
Budgeting and Planning Commission testimony, signing of the Transfer
legislation, working with the Presidents’ Council on the
joint budget policy statement, the October release of the SCI report,
Senator Lesniak’s proposed legislation, and initiating
analysis of provisions of the NJ STARS program that may
require statutory
change.

Presidents’ Council Report: Dr. Yaw commented on finishing
the annual report, beginning the process of reviewing
its by-laws, the Transfer legislation, status and funding of
NJ
Transfer, joint
budget policy statement development, and NJEDge restructuring.

Guest Speaker: Lucille Davy, Commissioner, NJ Department of Education,
discussed five priority goals for the State Department of
Education.

Guest Speaker: Richard L. Cañas, Director, NJ Office
of Homeland Security and Preparedness, discussed
the Campus Security
Task Force and the completion of its report that
has been delivered to the Governor.

Report on Enrollments in Out-of-State Institutions: Ms. Marguerite
Beardsley, director of academic affairs, presented an overview
of enrollment in out-of-state institutions licensed in New
Jersey.
- Comments from the Public: Mr. Christopher Keating, student at Rutgers
University, commented on three pieces of proposed legislation
of interest to college students.
Next Meeting: October 26, 2007, at 10:00 a.m. at Ocean County
College in Toms River, New Jersey.
