Program Description:

The STARS (Students and Teachers are Reading Sports) Program provides elementary students from the Paterson

Public School District with free literacy instruction and reading enrichment based on sports-related children's

literature. Funded by Fleet Bank, this program reprsents a collaboration among a variety of organizations including

the Yogi berra Museum and Learning center, the Literacy Enrichment center at Montclair State University, and the

Paterson Public Schools. Every week, graduate students from Montclair State University and high school students

from Paterson join together with small groups of elementary students to enjoy books about sports and take part in

literacy-related activities. In addition, all participants attend related events that include author talks, guest lectures by

athletes, and field trips to sports games and the Yoggi Berra museum.
