| Program Description: |
| | The "Schoolyard Habitats: Living Laboratory" program functions as a teaching laboratory as well as a hands-on |
| | science laboratory. Together, children, parents, teachers and scientists actively explore ideas and do scientific |
| | experiments that are educational and fun. Summer Institutes for teachers new to the project are held each year for |
| | rigorous training in inquiry-based and problem-solving approaches to science teaching. Teachers are mentored |
| | throughout the program by experienced teachers. Those who participate in the Summer Institutes are prepared to |
| | lead after-school and summer science activities for children and their parents. The program is designed to foster |
| | inquiry approaches based on sound science concepts that promote student questioning and investigation. |
| | |
| | Students, teachers, and communities benefit from this program. Students benefit form ample time for experimentation |
| | and in-depth learning, the finest teacher guidance, and adequate materials to carry out investigations and |
| | explorations in science. Participating families help to spread the values of science education to the community. For |
| | teachers, the program provides a bridge between the Summer Institute experience and formal application of science |
| | teaching in the classroom. The school districts gain from the expanded science knowledge and experience of its |
| | teachers, many of whom will become turnkey trainers in the districts in-service sessions. |
