Program Description:

The goal of the Bloomfield College Upward Bound Program is to prepare its participants to complete their education

beyond high school and to develop, progress, and change into productive, well-rounded individuals. Participants of

the program will be more effective communicators upon completion. The program employs a holistic approach

toward the accomplishment of its intended objective. Students are offered academic, cultural, social, creative,

artistic, and professional enrichment.

Hosted by Bloomfield College since 1966, the Upward Bound Program is a precollege program, serving teenagers (13

- 18 years of age) from selected high schools in the Newark and East Orange areas. The program offers a follow-

up component from September - April and a six-week summer residential component form June - August. The

eligibility criteria includes completion of the 8th grade, poverty level, household income, and/or first generation status.

The program services offered include the following: academic courses; counseling; mentoring; college tours; tutoring;

parent/student workshops; postsecondary information; and financial aid assistance.

The student, through his/her efforts, along with a supportive staff, and cooperative family members, will develop into

a more productive, well rounded adult, capable of rational, responsible decisions.
