Program Description:

Proyecto Access is an educational consortium created in 1996 by the Office of Equal Opportunity Program

(OEOP),Minority University Research and Education Division (MURED) of the National Aeronautics and Space

Administration (NASA) and administered by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). The

consortium consists of HACU and nine of its Hispanic serving institutions in eight states in the United States. Its

main function is to conduct an eight-week summer program in science, mathematics and computer science at these

institutions.

The basic structure of Proyecto Access is modeled after an extremely successful summer program in Texas called

the Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program (TexPREP). TexPREP was started in 1979 at the University of Texas at

San Antonio by Dr. Manual Berriozabal and now operates in 23 Texas community and senior college campuses in 12

Texas cities. The program curriculum consist of three summer sessions called Prep1 (7th grade students), PREP2

(returning PREP1 students) and PREP3 (returning PREP2 students). The success of TexPREP is illustrated by the

following statistics: since 1979 18,300 participants have successfully completed at least one summer component of

TexPREP; 80% have been minorities and 54% have been women and 50% have come form low income families. The

high school graduation rate of TexPREP participants has been 99%, the college entrance rate 92% and the college

graduation rate 87%. Of the college graduates 56% are engineering or science majors.
