| Program Description: |
| | Project GRAD (Graduation Really Achieves Dreams) is a program which began in Texas in the early 1990's. It is |
| | funded by Lucent Technologies Foundation. This program was brought to Newark, New Jersey in 1999. At that |
| | time, Rutgers-Newark and other academic institutions within Essex County became the host school for the Project |
| | GRAD students who were members of Malcolm X Shabazz High School. |
| | |
| | The purpose of the program is to: |
| | 1. Assist in student retention within the high school. |
| | 2. Create awareness of college life. |
| | 3. Develop an attitude of academic culture within each student's mindset. |
| | 4. Create awareness of possible professional careers. |
| | 5. Engender an interest on the part of the students to make college a goal. |
| | |
| | |
| | Each summer, each host school chooses a theme and shapes the curriculum for the 4 weeks the Project GRAD |
| | Scholars are on their respective campuses. The summer 2004 theme at Rutgers-Newark was "Sustainability of the |
| | Environment." The academic curriculum was shaped in such a way as to challenge and intellectually stimulate the |
| | students and at the same time stress certain New Jersey Core Academic Standards. |
