| Program Description: |
| | The mission of the SMART Program is to increase the awareness and interest of traditionally underrepresented |
| | minorities in science and health-related careers. The program offers students a chance to practice and develop |
| | "high order" thinking skills and the domain-independent competencies necessary for academic and workplace |
| | success. The program, designed for students grades 8th through 12th, is a set of precollege activities, including |
| | leadership training, problem solving, math and computer classes, college tours, and oral and written presentations. |
| | The students spend their time not only learning but having fun. |
| | |
| | NJMS SMART Initiatives include: |
| | |
| | BIOTREK: The Way to Go! - A program that explores human biology. Sample topics: body systems, muscles and |
| | bones, physics of motion, respiration, and injury prevention. Math, computers, and lots of field trips are also included. |
| | Applicants must currently be in 7th grade. |
| | |
| | Fantastic Voyage - A program of scientific discovery. Sample topics: flight, sound, circulatory system, growth rates, |
| | ratios and proportions, tables and graphs. Math, computers, and lots of field trips are also included. Applicants must |
| | currently be in 8th grade. |
| | |
| | EnviroQUEST - Explore connections between health, science, and environment. Emphasis on laboratory and |
| | research skills. Sample topics: bacteria, water, lead, poisons, radioactivity. Lots of field trips are also included. |
| | Applicants must currently be in 9th grade. |
| | |
| | Mission: Health - Learn what becoming a health professional involves. Emphasis on community service and case- |
| | based learning where students work in small groups with medical students from UMDNJ to discuss health-related |
| | topics. Applicants must currently be in 10th grade. |
| | |
| | Biomedical & Health/AP Sciences Research Apprenticeships - Participants work with professionals in classroom, |
| | clinical and/or research settings. AP science courses, SAT prep, college tours, college counseling, and lectures by |
| | health professionals are also offered. Applicants must currently be in 11th grade. |
