The New Jersey Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect and the state Assembly today honored 17 elementary school students from across the state for posters that were chosen to be published in the task force's 2002 calendar.

The task force and New Jersey PTA have sponsored the art contest each year since 1987. The students' winning posters are then placed on a calendar that also features parenting tips and resource lists. The calendars are distributed to doctors’ offices, clinics, hospitals and schools.

Each year, the calendar features an artwork theme. The 2002 theme is safety. Student artists were asked to complete the sentence "I feel safe when" and illustrate their sentences on posters. Each student whose artwork is chosen receives a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and certificate.

Assembly Speaker Jack Collins and Department of Human Services Acting Commissioner James W. Smith Jr. presented the awards today in the state Assembly chamber.

"The posters we are honoring today remind us that young children are wise beyond their years," Acting Commissioner Smith said. "Long ago, there was a popular television show called "Kids Say the Darnedest Things," and, you know, they really do. And in so doing, they sometimes teach us adults about life."
