Update: Commissioner Harris announces 243 children have been reached

New Jersey Department of Human Services Commissioner Gwendolyn L. Harris announced today that Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) caseworkers had seen 243 of the 280 children identified last week -- cases where an allegation of abuse and/or neglect had been made and the children had not yet been seen by caseworkers. That means 37 children remain to be seen.

Of the 243 children DYFS has seen, there have been substantiations of abuse and neglect in 15 cases, but DYFS has had to remove only one child from their home.

In the cases where DYFS substantiated abuse and neglect but did not remove children, it was because DYFS findings were not sufficient to warrant removal.

These could include instances, for example where children had not attended school, or had arrived at school dirty or unkempt. DYFS will be providing services to those families, as needed.

DYFS is continuing to work to locate the remaining 37 children.
