Snow Removal Vital to Persons with Disabilities

TRENTON – As the winter months approach, Department of Human Services’ (DHS) Commissioner Jennifer Velez reminds New Jersey residents of the “Snow Removal Law,” requiring business owners and operators of parking lots to remove snow, ice and obstacles from accessible, “handicapped” parking spaces, curb cuts, ramps and other areas designed to provide accessibility for persons with disabilities.

“Many people remain unaware of the Snow Removal Law,” said Commissioner Velez. “The cooperation of New Jersey businesses and community members is essential for persons with disabilities to be able to navigate access to businesses and other community facilities.”

The law, (N.J.S.A. 39:4-207.9) passed in 1999, requires that accessible areas be cleared within 48 hours of the inclement weather or face risk of receiving a fine. The fines range from $200 to $500.

“The Snow Removal Law was passed through the hard work of disability advocates across the state and the New Jersey Council on Developmental Disabilities,” said Commissioner Velez. “It is important for us all, as members of our communities, to be aware and remind others of the need for accessible accommodations for persons with disabilities.”
