"CBVI Participates in January 2006 - American Sign Language Story Hour at Library for the Blind and Handicapped"

January 17, 2006

Mr. Vito J. DeSantis, Executive Director New Jersey Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired
153 Halsey Street, 6th Floor
Newark, New Jersey 07101

Dear Mr. DeSantis,

Thank you for your today's reading of "A Picture Book of Louis Braille" by David Adler to the 45 children who attended our January American Sign Language (ASL) Story Hour here at the New Jersey Library for the Blind and Handicapped. The kids, who are Deaf, Hard of Hearing and multiply disabled, were fascinated to watch you read in Braille, as well as by the sad but uplifting story of Louis Braille's life.

We deeply appreciate your participation in today's event, as well as your ongoing support of our efforts to instill a love of reading in all the children we serve, whether blind, visually impaired, Deaf-blind, reading or physically disabled, or Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Despite the fact that the story hour coincided with Governor Corzine's inauguration, we were pleased to see that Channel 12 news covered the story hour and taped a special statement from you.

The monthly ASL Story Hours are one of the Library's literacy initiatives, held in partnership with the NJ Division for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, who provide American Sign Language interpreters for these programs. The children who attend are second-through-fifth graders from the Marie H. Katzenbach School for the Deaf, as well as multiply handicapped teens from the Hunterdon County ESC school, who use ASL in their curriculum.
Home-schooled neighborhood children also attend.

Please extend our thanks also to David DeNotaris and Christine Hinton of the Meyer's Center for presenting the educational segment of today's program. Their demonstration of educational toys used by blind and visually impaired children helped the Deaf and Hard of Hearing children understand some of the challenges faced by children with other disabilities.

We look forward to continuing our work together with you and the Commission for the Blind and Visually Impaired staff in advancing literacy in New Jersey.

Sincerely,

Venetia V. Demson, Director
