What is the SSP-NJ Project?

SSP-NJ is a collaborative effort between the New Jersey Commission for the Blind & Visually Impaired (CBVI) and The College of New Jersey; the project is funded by CBVI.

By promoting and supporting employment for adults who are deaf-blind, SSP-NJ encourages community integration through the development and implementation of a statewide network of Support Service Providers.

 
 
What is an SSP?

A Support Service Provider (SSP) provides visual and environmental information, human guide services and access to information so that a deaf-blind individual is empowered to make his or her own informed decisions. Traditionally, an SSP facilitates a deaf-blind individual’s ability to maintain a healthy, independent lifestyle, further their education, find and/or continue employment, and enjoy full access to family, friends and community. In New Jersey, however, at the present time, SSP-NJ focuses on the promotion of employment by supporting vocational, health, education and independent living activities.

SSPs are trained professionals. They are not employees of CBVI, the State of New Jersey or The College of New Jersey; rather, they are paid, independent contractors. They provide support at home, at work and in the community.

 
 
Key responsibilities of an SSP
  • Relay visual and environmental information in the person’s preferred language and communication mode.
  • Serve as a human guide while walking and on public transportation, para-transit, or taxi or other hired service.
  • Provide casual interpreting and facilitate communication for social and community activities. This is done in the deaf-blind person’s preferred language and communication mode.
