New Jersey Relay Services
- Dial 711
Telecommunications Relay Services (TRS) allows anyone who may have
a hearing or speech loss to communicate with almost anyone in the
world on the phone! TRS is for YOU if you are deaf, hard of hearing,
speech impaired, deaf-blind or a hearing person who wants to communicate
with deaf, hard of hearing or speech impaired friends. Come and
become a part of the world and learn more about TRS!
What is Relay? Relay is for anyone who is deaf, hard-of-hearing, late-deafened,
deaf-blind or speech impaired, and who uses a TTY/TDD or standard
telephone to communicate. The message is then skillfully relayed by
a Communications Assistant (CA), word for
word, to the hearing person on the other end of the line. The CA types
what the hearing person has said back to the TTY user. And, as required
by law, each conversation is handled with the strictest of confidentiality.
There is no additional charge to access AT&T Relay Services.
Independence now is more than a noble calling for the relay community.
Speech-to-Speech Relay Service, and 900 Pay-Per-Call Relay Services
are available. Speech-to-Speech Relay Service allows a person whose
speech may be difficult to understand to communicate over the telephone
with the help of a specially trained Communications Assistant. No
special telephone is needed for this calling option.
Now TTY/TDD relay customers also can access any 900 service provider
by dialing the 900 Pay-Per-Call Relay. Spanish Relay users can even
access Speech-to-Speech, and 900 Pay-Per-Call services through a
dedicated toll free number specifically for Spanish
speaking relay users!
Dial 711: One simple number is all you need to put you in touch
with the New Jersey Relay Service. You get the same quality connection
you’ve always counted on, without having to dial your old,
11-digit toll-free number! In fact, dialing 711 will eliminate the
need to dial
800 numbers altogether. However, the 800 numbers you are currently
using will remain active. This means that customers today can dial
either 711 for simple access or 800 numbers for quick access.
711 works for Voice, TTY / ASCII (PC), STS, Spanish callers, and
900 users alike, making access to all types of relay services more
convenient and keeping the lines of communication open between the
hearing and anyone with a hearing or speech loss.
Dialing 711 adds no additional charges and is available 24 hours a
day, seven days a week. About the only thing you can’t do with
711 is use it in the case of emergency. Remember: 711 is NOT the relay
users equivalent of 911! Please make a note of that.
