The Division of Medical Assistance
and Health Services (DMAHS) administers the state-and federally- funded Medicaid
program for certain groups of low to moderate income people.
Through these programs, DMAHS serves more than 1,000,000
people with an operating budget in Fiscal Year 2007 of $5.5 billion. Its staff
of 575 people work both in Trenton and in Medical Assistance
Customer Centers (MACCs) throughout the state.
People can apply for these programs either by calling
1-800-356-1561 or by contacting their
appropriate
local County Board of Social Services .
Health Insurance Programs administered by DMAHS
- New Jersey Medicaid provides
health insurance to over 1,000,000 low income parents, children and people who
are blind or disabled. The program pays for hospital services, doctor visits,
prescriptions, nursing home care and other healthcare needs.
- NJ FamilyCare
is a health insurance program for children, whose Family's incomes are too high for
them to qualify for "traditional" New Jersey Medicaid but not high enough to be able
to afford private health insurance.
Managed Care
[Managed Care Contract Volume 1]
| [Managed Care Contract Volume 2]
Since 1995, most New Jersey Medicaid, including NJ FamilyCare
beneficiaries, have been enrolled in managed care .
With managed care, beneficiaries are enrolled in an HMO
that manages their healthcare and provides services in addition to the wide
array of Medicaid health benefits to which they are entitled. A major benefit of
enrolling in an HMO is that New Jersey Medicaid beneficiaries can choose from
among many physicians and other medical professionals who are part of the HMO's
network of healthcare providers.
NJ FamilyCare beneficiaries, who are also enrolled in managed
care, receive healthcare benefits similar to those offered through the most widely
sold health insurance plans in the private healthcare market.
Traditional Fee-For-Service New Jersey Medicaid
Some New Jersey Medicaid beneficiaries, including those who reside
in institutions and those who receive both Medicare and Medicaid benefits, continue
to receive traditional "fee-for-service" Medicaid. Physicians and other healthcare
providers bill New Jersey Medicaid directly for their services. For more New Jersey
Medicaid provider information go to Provider Resources
