State Psychiatric Hospitals

The Division of Mental Health Services operates five psychiatric hospitals that serve people with persistent and severe mental illnesses who are in need of intensive, inpatient care and treatment. These hospitals and the populations they serve are:

  • The Senator Garrett W. Hagedorn Psychiatric Hospital in Glen Gardner serves the general and the elderly populations.

  • The Ann Klein Forensic Center in Trenton serves people who have been determined by the courts to be Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity or Incompetent to Stand Trial or who require special security measures due to the nature of their illness.

  • Ancora Psychiatric Hospital in Winslow Township serves not only a general adult population but also has units that serve elderly forensic patients and people who have been dually diagnosed to have both a developmental disability and a mental illness.

  • Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital in Parsippany serves adults

  • Trenton Psychiatric Hospital in Trenton serves adults.

A sixth hospital, Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital in Marlboro, closed on June 30, 1998 as part of a divisional reorganization.
