On
February 11, 1980, Jacques Hemerle past-posted a bet while playing
a game of Roulette at the Bally Park Place Casino. He placed 8 chips
worth $25 each which bet won the sum of $7,000. The winnings were
claimed by Angelo Casali, a co-defendant in this matter and an associate
of defendant Hemerle.
On August 5, 1980, Mr. Hemerle and Mr. Casali were indicted by a
State Grand Jury for cheating and swindling and conspiracy to cheat
and swindle at casino gambling. Subsequent thereto, Mr. Casali became
a fugitive and a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.
On April 27, 1981, Mr. Hemerle pleaded guilty to Count 1 of Indictment
SGJ 70-80-4 charging him with conspiracy to cheat and swindle at
casino gambling. He was sentenced the same day and received a $500
fine from the Honorable Michael Conner, J.S.C. Count 2 charging
him with cheating and swindling was dismissed pursuant to the plea
agreement. As Mr. Hemerle is a French National, he received no probation.
The State Police investigation revealed that Mr. Hemerle had recently
received questionable roulette payoffs on two prior occasions at
Resorts International Casino. No action, however, was taken on these
incidents due to a lack of evidence. |
