NEWARK – In observance of America Saves Week 2013, February 25 to March 2, the New Jersey Bureau of Securities is helping investors in New Jersey talk the talk about their personal finances.

“The more families can talk about their finances, the better they will be in the long run,” said Bureau Chief Abbe R. Tiger. “Information is the best defense against losing hard-earned savings to investment fraud."

To help people talk about financial matters, the Bureau is making available a series of “Conversation Starters,” developed by the North American Securities Administration (NASAA) and available on NASAA’s website at www.nasaa.org.

“These conversation starters are a series of open-ended questions designed to help families kick-start an ongoing dialogue about budgeting, saving, investing and avoiding scams and frauds,” Bureau Chief Tiger said. “Whether you are just starting out as a newlywed or entering retirement, there are questions to get you and your loved ones talking about the often difficult issue of money.”

The Bureau can provide detailed information about an investment product, broker or adviser. This information is easy to obtain and more extensive than information from other sources.

The Bureau also recommends these investment fraud prevention tips for savers:

  • Investigate before you invest. Check out the registration and license of potential investments and salespeople.
  • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
  • Take your time. Don’t give in to high-pressure sales tactics.
  • If you’ve been a victim of fraud, contact the Bureau at 1-866-446-8378.

"Investors who contact us will have access to all the information they need to have a meaningful conversation about their personal finances and make wise decisions about investing their savings,” said Bureau Chief Tiger.

The N.J. Bureau of Securities is the state’s securities regulator, administering the Uniform Securities Law and its regulations. The Bureau regulates firms and individuals and maintains a regulatory staff, field examination staff and investigators. The Bureau is a member of the North American Securities Administrators Association and works with other state securities regulators on joint investigations and areas of concern. The Bureau’s website can be accessed at www.njsecurities.gov.
