"Buckle Up America"

West Trenton - The New Jersey State Police and the United States Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, will begin a seat belt/child restraint initiative called "Buckle Up America" on May 19, 2003 and will continue to June 1, 2003.

New Jersey State Police Captain Thomas Dreher, Traffic Bureau Chief, stated that over the past year more than 42,000 people were killed on US highways. Someone is killed every 13 seconds and a crash occurs every five seconds. Before the primary seat belt law was enacted, New Jersey was 63% compliant in the use of seat belts. For the year 2002, New Jersey is 80.5% compliant, as compared to 78 % for the rest of the country. The goal is another 2% increase in seat belt use, which would save additional 550 lives, 8,800 injuries, and save 8.8 billion in medical, insurance, property damage, and funeral costs.

In the year 2000, the latest year statistics are available, 75% of occupants ejected from a motor vehicle were killed. For children under the age of five, 47% of those killed in motor vehicle accidents were unrestrained. Seat belts saves lives and it only takes a second to buckle up.

Captain Dreher advised that Troopers will partner with municipal police departments conducting seat belt enforcement throughout the state. Handouts will also be given to motorists, educating them on occupant protection.
