STATE POLICE NORTHERN AREA PATROLS BEGIN
SEAT BELT ENFORCEMENT PROGRAM

Troop "B" Looks to Reduce Motor Vehicle Accident Injuries and Fatalities

West Trenton, N.J. - New Jersey State Police Superintendent Joseph J. Santiago today announced that Troop "B" patrols will initiate a seat belt enforcement program aimed at enhancing motorist safety by reducing injuries and fatalities resulting from motor vehicle accidents.

Superintendent Santiago stated, "In response to a 50% increase in fatal motor vehicle accidents within the Troop "B" area of responsibility, and the startling fact that nearly two thirds of the fatalities occurred to occupants who were not seat belted, Troop "B" Troopers have been instructed to make a concentrated enforcement effort to increase seat belt compliance."

"New Jersey's seat belt compliance rate is currently 82%," according to Santiago, "however the low compliance rate for fatalities emphasizes the need for increased enforcement and education.".

Effective August 3, the New Jersey State Police, in cooperation with the Division of Highway Traffic Safety's "CLICK IT OR TICKET" program, Troopers from all Troop "B" Stations and Tactical Patrol Units will conduct enforcement details at specially designated locations. In most cases, the enforcement sites will be intersections with traffic control devices, to identify vehicle occupants that are in non-compliance with state statutes pertaining to passenger and child restrains. Locations will be selected to ensure that the normal flow of traffic is not impeded.

Additionally, Troopers will hand out informational literature to increase motorist awareness of the dangers and penalties of non-compliance. Drivers and front seat passengers who do not wear their seat belts face a $43 summons.
