The swimming program in the Academy is fast paced and requires
recruits to have a certain degree of swimming proficiency.
Emphasis is placed on "Survival" of the recruit when confronted
with water emergencies.
Each recruit is required to complete a minimum skills test
in order to participate in the water safety program. The minimum
skills test consists of swimming 50 yards and treading water
for 5 minutes. Pre-requisites for the water safety program
include swimming the front and back crawl, breaststroke and
sidestroke kicks and the standing front dive. Other course
requirements include but are not limited to: successful demonstration
of different swimming strokes, diving, underwater swims and
turns and treading water. Recruits must also successfully
complete the American Red Cross Emergency Water Safety Course.
