MAJOR JOB DUTIES (a copy of the complete position description is available in the Human Resource Office): Disassembles damaged  mobile equipment bodies and components to determined nature and extent of damage and required repairs. Fabricates, assembles, and installs a variety of components made of sheet metal for buses, trailers, shelters, and other equipment. Removes and replaces damaged fenders, quarters panels, and top panels by cutting and welding with oxyacetylene and electric arc equipment. Repairs radiators, fuel tanks, and similar items by straightening, soldering, patching, tube rodding and splicing, plugging core sections, replacing cores and pressure testing for leaks. Occasionally performs electrical repair work such as removing, spicing, insulating, soldering, and replacing cut or defective wiring on mobile equipment. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS: For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver’s license for the state in which they live or are principally employed.

 

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:  Experience, education, or training which has provided the candidate with a knowledge of mobile body construction, and the skill to remove, fabricate, reshape, and replace or repair such damage as, dents, tears, wrinkles, cuts and crease by cutting, knocking out, welding, filling and sanding.

 

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have 15 months experience in the following: 

ABILITY to determine the methods, equipment, materials, and techniques required to repair damaged mobile equipment bodies and metal body components parts or provide replacements. Knowledge of metal body construction to determine the extent of damage and how various components and parts are installed, i.e., bolted, soldered, riveted or welded.

ABILITY to apply body filler to build up depressed areas, and the skill to smooth by grinding and sanding, until the contour is uniform with adjoining areas. Ability to apply primer paint with brush or spray gun equipment.

SKILL in using hammers, dolly blocks, spoons, bending irons, mallets, sanders, grinders, files and hydraulic jacks to remove dents and creases in mobile equipment body components. Skill in the using sheet metal working equipment to cut, bend, form, and shape materials. Skill in using oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment to cut, weld, remove or replace damaged fenders, quarter panels, and top panels.

KNOWLEDGE of basic electricity to remove, splice, insulate, solder, replace, or cut defective wiring on mobile equipment.

KNOWLEDGE of arithmetic to calculate and scribe patterns in the fabrication of wood or metal parts.

 

SUBSTITUTION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Study successfully completed in a college, university, technical or vocational school may be substituted for experience at the rate of one year of study (30 semester hours or 20 classroom hours of instruction per week) for 6 months of specialized experience.  Courses must be directly related to the work of the position.
