Gary R. Englert , Director
World War II Commission
The World War II Memorial Commission is moving forward, finalizing details in preparation for the start of construction. Recently, noted artist Thomas Jay Warren was awarded the commission to create the three central sculptures that are focal points of the Memorial. “Lady Victory, “ “Lone Soldier,” and the “Battlefield Marker” will be cast in bronze and be placed in sequence within the Memorial proper. Other commissions by Warren can be seen at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Holmdel and the Korean War Memorial in Atlantic City. The Commission still needs to raise $4 million through corporate and private donations before ground can be broken. For further information or to make a donation, please call the Director of Veterans Services at 609-530-7049 or visit our website.
New Jersey Korean War Memorial
On 20 January 2006, two multi-media kiosks were installed at the NJ Korean War Memorial in Atlantic City. The multi-media kiosks contain inter-active historical and present day audio-visual presentations that detail the history of the monument, the Korean War, and the men and women who served our state and nation during this conflict. New Jersey Network (NJN) and the Department of Military & Veterans Affairs developed the kiosks in a joint venture. Opened in November 2000, the New Jersey Korean War Memorial is dedicated to ensuring that future generations of Americans remember the proud and dedicated service of New Jersey’s Korean War Veterans; the legacy they continued; and the freedom they preserved. The Memorial is located in Brighton Park, Atlantic City – where Park Place meets the Boardwalk. It is a fitting and lasting tribute to the men and women from New Jersey who answered the call of our nation during the Korean War. BG William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery
Construction of the cemetery’s new $6.15 million Administration and Maintenance Complex continues, contending with the challenges presented by a warm, but very wet, winter. The cemetery was honored to host then Governor-Elect Jon S. Corzine at its annual Veterans Day Ceremony, on 11 November 2005, who addressed the hundreds who attended. The grounds were brightened for the Holiday Season by the more than 1,100 grave blankets that were sold by our volunteer Veterans Cemetery Advisory Council. The funds raised go toward permanent beautification projects at Doyle, the nation’s busiest state veterans cemetery.
Veterans Haven
The transitional housing facility for homeless veterans has just received twelve (12) 19” TV/DVD/VCR sets from the Jewish War Veterans, Cherry Hill, and ten (10) sets from the Disabled American Veterans, Hamilton Chapter 41. Each resident unit will have a set after The Motorcycle Rights Association of New Jersey donates the remaining twenty-one (21) units. The residents wish to thank all the organizations for their continued support.
