GARY R. ENGLERT - Director, Division of Veterans Services

Mr. Gary Englert joined DMVA’s staff as the new Director of Veterans Services on Monday, 21 March 2005. Gary is a highly decorated Vietnam veteran who served with the 23rd Infantry Division (Americal). Long involved with veteran’s issues, he is a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Vice-Commander VFW Post 376 in West Orange, New Jersey. Prior to his appointment as director, he was the Superintendent of Public Property for the Township of West Orange.

Legislation Creates World War II Memorial Fund

On March 28, 2005, Acting Governor Richard J. Codey signed Senate Bill No. 2365 into law, creating the World War II Veterans Memorial Fund and allowing the Adjutant General and Deputy Commissioner for Veterans Affairs to proceed with private fundraising for the project. Tentatively scheduled for completion by Memorial Day 2006, New Jersey’s monument to “The Greatest Generation” will be constructed across from the State House in Trenton. A groundbreaking ceremony is being planned for fall 2005 and financial donations are encouraged. The expansion and improvements program continues on track. The Administration and Maintenance Complex project are in progress. The construction estimate for the installation of more than 5,900 lawn crypts in section "R" have been received.

The Cemetery’s Joint Color Guard will appear offsite at numerous ceremonies during the month of May 2005. New members of the Honor Guard Staff are SFC Anthony Bokeko ANG (Ret.), SPC. Frantz Souffrant, and Sr. CPO Ken Mcafee U.S.N. (Ret.).

On Friday, May 27, at 5:00 PM, scouting organizations from throughout the state have been invited to assist with the placement of close to 33,000 flags for Memorial Day. The Memorial Day program will be held on Saturday, May 28, at 11 AM; the parade begins at 10:30 AM.

Veterans Haven

April 2005, Funds were donated from the Department of the American Legion for the procurement of a new fifteen (15)-passenger van. The residents appreciate the continued support they receive from various organizations throughout the years.

State Approving Agency

New education benefit for Activated Reservists – effective 28 October 2004, the House of Representatives signed into law a new educational benefit – Chapter 1607. The new benefit makes certain individuals who were activated on/or after 11 September 2001 either eligible for education benefits or eligible for increased benefits.
