VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
POLICY STATEMENT.
The Division of Veterans Healthcare Services (DVHS) requires each of the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes (VMH) to facilitate a Volunteer Program that consists of a network of individual, group, organizational and community volunteers supporting the interests and needs of the residing population of residents.
PURPOSE.
This policy and procedure shall serve to ensure that veteran home residents are afforded the benefit of an organized network of individual and volunteer groups in support of Activities Department efforts to provide social opportunities, physical activities, creative, educational and cultural programs, spiritual opportunities, as well as cognitive and sensory awareness programs, and community integration programs.
DEFINITIONS.
FACILITY VOLUNTEER – a person who
completes a formal application to serve as a volunteer, is interviewed,
selected and placed in a volunteer program under the direct supervision
of a facility staff member.
ORGANIZATIONAL or COMMUNITY VOLUTEER –
the representative of a community organization or interest group who organizes
and arranges for donations, special event trips or parties, etc., under
the assistance, guidance and supervision of a facility staff member.
PROCEDURE.

2. The New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes will facilitate a volunteer
program in support of providing social opportunities, physical activities,
creative, educational and cultural programs, as well as spiritual opportunities,
cognitive and sensory awareness programs, and community integration programs
for the benefit of residing residents.
ACTIVTIES DEPARTMENT.
1. Will screen persons interested in serving as individual or group
volunteers for the VMHs, and may call for a formal application prior to
placement in the organized program. A reference check may be in
order for unfamiliar individual applicants.
2. Will interview all those who submit an application to serve as
a volunteer, assessing interest and ability prior to selection and/or
placement in an organized program.
3. Will determine the volunteer’s placement based upon the
applicant’s experience, area of expertise, abilities and Departmental
requests or needs.
4. Volunteers will be required to sign in and out when services are
performed.
5. Will provide an orientation to facility policies and procedures,
and guiding regulatory requirements including areas such as the Health
Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the patient privacy
act.
6. Will afford volunteers educational and training opportunities
related to their assigned areas of responsibility.
7. The Supervisor of Volunteer Services will meet with volunteers
on a pre-arranged schedule to address activities, services and concerns.
