THE HANDLING/DISTRIBUTING OF DONATED FOODS

 

POLICY STATEMENT:

The Division of Veterans Healthcare Services requires each of the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes to develop and implement protocols that ensure the proper handling and/or distribution of donated food products.

PURPOSE:

This policy and procedure shall serve to ensure food products or related items donated for veteran home residents are handled and/or distributed in the appropriate manner. All Food Services facilities shall operate with safe food handling practices, in accordance with New Jersey Sanitary Code, N.J.A.C. 8:24.

DEFINITION:

DONATED FOOD PRODUCT - Food products that have not been prepared by veteran home personnel.

PROCEDURE:

A. New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes

  1. The New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes shall establish protocols, in accordance with Federal and State regulatory and licensing requirements, that assure food products donated for veteran home residents are handled and/or distributed properly.

 

Food Services Department

 

a. The Food Services Supervisor/Designee will discourage, as far as possible, the veterans’ home accepting of home-prepared food.

b. Food donations will be accepted only from approved vendors.

c. Donations will be stored in the food storeroom in the same manner as regularly purchased food products/items.

d. Food Services personnel shall request donated food products from the storeroom supervisor in the same manner one would use for regularly purchased food products/ items.

e. The request for the donated food product must be issued for the following purposes:

 

i. Veteran resident activities.

ii. Food Service need for resident meals.

 

f. If there is a surplus of the donated products/items, the Food Services Supervisor may offer the surplus to a sister facility.

g. If there is no need for the products/items at the other New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes, then the products/items may be offered to other State Facilities


Storeroom

 

a. Donations must be stored in a clean and sanitary manner, following the same procedures for facility purchased food products/items.

b. The Storeroom Supervisor/Designee must maintain a current inventory of all donated food products/items.

c. Storeroom personnel must handle requests for donated food service items in the standard manner.

d. When donated food items are given to other facilities, a receipt must be obtained from the individual receiving the items and shall be kept on file for audit purposes.

e. An area designated, “Damaged Products” will be located in the storeroom.
