POLICY STATEMENT.
The Division of Veterans Healthcare Services (DVHS) requires that each of the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes (VMH) establish a nursing services program that requires every licensed nurse involved in the ordering, transcription, and administration of medication, to strictly adhere to the Pharmaceutical Policy and Procedure Manual of the Pharmaceutical Services Company currently contracted with the State of New Jersey Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.
PURPOSE.
This policy and procedure shall serve to ensure that licensed nurses involved in the ordering, transcription, and administration of medications read and firmly adhere to the contracted Pharmaceutical Services Company’s Policy and Procedure Manual.
PROCEDURE.
- New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes
- The New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes shall ensure all licensed nurses involved in the ordering, transcription, and administration of medication, firmly adhere to the Contracted Pharmaceutical Services Company’s Policy and Procedure Manual ensuring:
- Uniform standards for quality pharmaceutical care to the residents by the nursing staff.
- The provision of a written document that delineates a clear and systematic procedure for performing drug-related resident care services.
- The Drug Therapy Program is properly carried out in accordance with physician orders and accepted standards of practice.
- The provision of pharmaceutical services through the functions of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
- The Contracted Pharmaceutical Services Company’s Policy and Procedure Manual will serve as a reference point for all members of the Interdisciplinary Team.
- Outdated, unusable and non-returnable medications will be properly disposed of in accordance with the Contracted Pharmaceutical Services Company’s Policy and Procedure Manual.
- Controlled dangerous substances (CDS) and hypodermic syringe and needle inventories will be closely monitored and accounted for at all times utilizing declining inventory sheets, signed by two (2) nurses at every shift change, in accordance with the Contracted Pharmaceutical Services Company’s Policy and Procedure Manual.
