INMATE/EMPLOYEE RELATIONSHIP GUIDELINES

I. PURPOSE:

To provide regulation concerning employee relationships with inmates from the correctional facilities who are working at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes.

II. DEFINTION:

a) Inmate: A person who is incarcerated and has been assigned to a work detail program at one of the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes

III. POLICY:

a) The employees at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes shall interact with inmate only to the extent, which the execution of their duties requires. Any communication between employees and inmates shall be limited to job performance.

b) The employees at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Homes shall not:

i) indulge in undue familiarity with inmates nor permit inmates to unduly familiar with them.

ii) enter into personal or intimate relationships with inmates.

iii) leave any vehicle unlocked, unattended with keys in the ignition, or parked in an unauthorized area.

iv) leave unattended any valuable personal belongings such as money, paychecks, credit cards, jewelry, wallets, or purses.

v) give to or receive from inmates money, stamps, vehicle keys, alcoholic beverages, prescription or non-prescription drugs, messages (written or verbal), private telephone numbers, or confidential files or materials.

vi) perform personal favors for inmates nor request or permit inmates to perform personal favors for them.

c) The employees at New Jersey Veterans Homes are required to immediately report to their immediate supervisor any knowledge of any occurrence of the above (3.b.i through vi) or any other matter involving themselves, or any other employees, and an intimate.

d) With probable cause vehicles and other property maybe searched by appropriate law enforcement personnel.
