Re-inspection at State Inspection Facilities

If your vehicle fails inspection and you choose to have your vehicle re-inspected at a State Inspection Facility, you may not have to wait in line and go through the inspection lane to be retested. Some items (see list below) that fail inspection can be re-inspected by following the by-pass lane for re-inspections. There is a designated re-inspection area at most State Inspection facilities. There are signs posted directing drivers to the designated area.

Items that are usually tested in the by-pass lane:

  • Credentials – registration, driver’s license, insurance
  • Glass failures
  • Tint
  • Wipers
  • Horn
  • Lights
  • Tires
  • Parking Brake
  • Parking Brake Reserve

However, there are certain items that cannot be re-tested in the by-pass lanes and will require going through the main inspection lane (and maybe even waiting in line). These items include:

Items that must be tested in the main inspection lanes:

  • Brakes
  • Steering and Suspension
  • Emissions

Please note that not all State Inspection Facilities are large enough to accommodate by-pass lanes. You will need to use the same inspection lanes as all other drivers if visiting any of the following facilities:

  • Bridgeton
  • Cape May
  • Millville
  • Plainfield
  • Salem
  • Washington
  • Winslow
  • Westfield
