Union County to Gain Modernized MVC Customer Service Facility Slated to Open in 2010
New Rahway agency to provide more flexibility for employees, greater customer efficiency and additional services for the future while saving taxpayer dollars
(RAHWAY) – Maintaining the Motor Vehicle Commission’s (MVC) focus on continuing successful customer service enhancements throughout the state, Acting Chief Administrator Shawn B. Sheekey today highlighted facility and service improvements at the ground breaking of the future Rahway Agency in Union County. The infrastructure project is a part of the organization’s ongoing efforts to improve and enhance its facilities and services for customers statewide.
Joined by state and local officials, Sheekey noted the success the MVC has achieved with similar facilities in Freehold and Flemington, emphasizing that these critical investments help to achieve Governor Jon S. Corzine’s vision of a responsive, efficient and effective government.
“Investments in critical infrastructure such as this new MVC agency benefit New Jersey’s citizens in many ways,” said Governor Corzine. “These types of projects create job opportunities, increase departmental efficiencies and provide enhanced services to our residents–all which contribute to making state government work better for taxpayers.”
Advancing forward-thinking concepts such as this prototype agency, demonstrates to the taxpayers of New Jersey that the MVC is a wise steward of public dollars,” said Sheekey. “Careful planning and preparation for the future is what keeps our agency on track with many of the positive changes that motor vehicle customers have experienced over the last six years.”
The new Rahway Agency, which is slated to open in 2010 on the same state-owned site as the existing agency, provides a more flexible and adaptable floor plan for MVC employees to better serve customers. With more than 9,200 square feet of customer and employee space, 15 service counters for greater efficiency in helping customers and room to accommodate additional services in the future, as needed and areas for regionalized employee training and driver improvement classes. The site will also gain a road test field house for management of the sites driver testing services.
The facility will provide added value to customers with its improved amenities and the State will also benefit through the elimination of a leased site, saving approximately $800,000 annually for this type of facility.
Mar-Bridge Enterprises, Inc. of Matawan will manage the $7.3 million construction project, which includes the new agency, demolition of a portion of the existing agency structure and construction of a road test field house. Spiezle Architectual Group of Trenton serves as the project architect. Funding for the Rahway Agency and other MVC renovation and construction projects was established through a bond included in the Motor Vehicle Security & Customer Service Act of 2003. These monies continue to be used to enhance existing facilities and build new Model Agencies to better serve New Jersey residents.
Approximately 100 workers are expected to be employed throughout the yearlong project, stimulating the local economy and bringing this long-awaited project to fruition. The prototype agency has already shown great success in the recently opened Freehold and Flemington locations. The modernized design provides environmentally friendly aspects such as sensor controlled light and water fixtures, a white, light-reflective roof, floors made from recycled materials and more natural light features to reduce energy costs by up to 50 percent and maintenance costs by 30 to 40 percent. Other new agency project locations include South Brunswick, Randolph and Lodi, all of which are also slated for 2010 openings.
“While staying true to the goal improving service, security and safety throughout our organization, the MVC has focused on advancing only those projects and initiatives that aid in the delivery of core motor vehicle services,” added Sheekey. “The agency is the most basic and most recognizable outlet that we have for service. Maintaining and improving our agencies is recognized as absolutely essential to our overall transformation.”
