Online Fees Reduced by 25 Percent for Motor Vehicle Services

Potential customer savings of over $670,000 annually

(TRENTON) – Customers who go online to conduct certain motor vehicle transactions will potentially save over $670,000 in fees over the next year with a new state agreement announced today by Motor Vehicle Commission Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez and State Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff. Under the agreement, contracted vendor NICUSA Inc., will now process credit card payments for online transactions such as vehicle registration renewals for 25 percent less per transaction than the state’s previous vendor.

“It’s my hope that even this small reduction puts a bit more money in our customers’ pockets and encourages them to do more online,” said Martinez. “This is not an MVC fee but it is important for us to ensure that the vendor’s processing fee is minimal.”

Beginning today, customers conducting online transactions will see reduced credit card processing fees on the following transactions:

Registration Renewals – $1.50 (down from $2.00)
Personalize/Specialty Plate transactions - $1.50 (down from $2.00)
Driver Abstract requests - $.75 (down from $1.00)

“Treasury’s job in managing State contracts is to make sure we make the best possible use of taxpayer dollars,” said State Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff. “Whenever we can make State services more efficient and responsive to the public we serve, we will do so.”

“Over the last year, we had over 1.3 million people renew their registrations online. We offer this and similar services for the convenience of our customers so that they can skip the trip to an agency and do their business easily from any computer,” said Martinez. “There is absolutely no need to visit an agency for certain MVC business.”

The MVC offers a range of other online services for customers including driver test scheduling, restoration and surcharge payments, vehicle inspection scheduling, change of address and organ donor registration. Customers are encouraged to take full advantage of all of the MVC’s online services, including for common transactions like registration renewals, which can be completed in a matter of minutes.
