Christie Administration Continues Focus on Customers with
(LAWRENCE TWP.) – Standing at the doorway of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s latest investment in customer service, Chairman and Chief Administrator Raymond P. Martinez today officially marked the grand opening of the new 12,000 square foot Bakers Basin Motor Vehicle Agency in Mercer County. The building, which is the largest of all the modernized facilities built over the last several years, replaces the 1950s-era agency and showcases MVC’s commitment to enhancing the customer experience.
“Bakers Basin is one of a number of full-service locations around the state that in the last year alone conducted roughly one million motor vehicle transactions, driver tests and inspections, so it makes sense that we would invest in the location to more efficiently manage this kind of volume,” said Martinez. “The MVC is focused on improving performance all around. This project will do just that, along with demonstrating our ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of our customers.”
The new agency replaces a 1957-constructed agency and is located on the same Route 1 property. The expanded floor plan vastly improves upon the previous layout with additional service counters and expanded customer waiting areas, as well as space for training. The facility also has environmentally-friendly features such as sensor-controlled light and water fixtures, a white, light-reflective roof, floors made from recycled materials and more natural light features to reduce energy costs. Construction of the new agency was finished on budget and two months ahead of schedule.
Demolition of the old agency and the construction of a road test field house for management of the site’s driver testing services and a vehicle inspection manager’s office will comprise the next phases of this project.
While praising the Bakers Basin project as focused on improving the effectiveness of MVC’s “brick and mortar” services, Martinez also highlighted additional Christie Administration efforts to offer greater convenience and reduce the need for customers to visit an MVC agency. Recently, the Administration announced the introduction of Skip the Trip – a driver’s license renewal-by-mail and customer-service initiative geared toward drivers born on or before December 1, 1964. Skip the Trip begins this November.
“We recognize that people want choices of how to conduct motor vehicle transactions and many have told the MVC that they’d like the option of more mail or online services,” said Martinez. “Inviting customers to Skip the Trip, which can potentially reduce agency customer volume by up to a million people statewide over the next year or so, is just one more way the Christie Administration is addressing those requests.”
The MVC presently offers a number of services online such as vehicle registration renewals, driver abstract requests and special license plate orders.

Recently, the MVC announced a similar reduction related to online credit card processing fees for motor vehicle transactions. The MVC also kicked off its driver license and ID renewal by mail program late last week to further reduce lines in agencies by allowing customers born on or before Dec. 1, 1964 to Skip the Trip to their local agency.Over the last two years, the MVC has taken a number of steps to improve service and increase efficiency at its agencies.
