The 2006 grant round awarded a total of $11 million in Historic Sites Management Grants and Capital Preservation Grants.  Historic Site Management Grants support non-construction activities such as conditions assessments, preservation plans and educational campaigns to increase public awareness.  Capital Preservation Grants support ‘bricks and mortar’ repair, restoration and rehabilitation of historic resources for continued active use.

The Historical Commission’s general operating support grants are designed to assist museums, historic sites, archives, libraries and similar organizations with collections or programming relating to the history of New Jersey.  These grants, which are determined by a peer review process, can be used to pay basic expenses such as salaries, hourly wages, utilities, leases and postage.   Funding for the grant program comes from a portion of the revenue produced by the state’s hotel and motel occupancy fee.   

Larry R. Greene, chairman of the Commission, pointed to the fact that the requests for funding exceeded the amount of dollars available in this grant program by a factor of 2.5 to 1.  “This reflects the growing interest in preserving our state’s history,” he said.  Secretary of State Nina Mitchell Wells thanked the Historical Commission for their support and their tireless effort to ensure that history in New Jersey continues to enrich our lives, today, tomorrow and for generations to come.
