Proclamation [pdf 269kB]
TRENTON - Governor Jon S. Corzine has proclaimed the week of November 26 to December 3 as "Life Sciences Week," in recognition of the valuable contribution that pharmaceutical, biotechnology and life science companies have made to the state of New Jersey.
New Jersey's pharmaceutical and medical technology industry remains a leading economic sector with an estimated economic impact of more that $27 billion on New Jersey's economy. The number of New Jersey's biotechnology and life sciences companies are growing rapidly with the number of startup, small, mid-size and fully integrated companies nearly tripling in the past decade.
"The pharmaceutical and life sciences industries are vital to New Jersey's economic stability," said Governor Corzine. "I am proud that 15 of the world's 20 largest pharmaceutical companies and over 235 biotech companies call New Jersey home. The men and women working in this important field help to maintain New Jersey's role as a global leader in life sciences."
The Governor's Economic Growth Strategy has placed high priority on encouraging innovation and maintaining the state's position as a leader in technology and life sciences, including workforce training initiatives to help workers develop advanced skills in order to qualify for high-quality jobs in this growing industry sector. Governor Corzine's initiatives to establish public-private partnerships with the life sciences industry have been recognized over the past two years with $15 million in federal Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) grants.
In 2006, Governor Corzine launched the Edison Innovation Fund to create and grow high-tech businesses in the state. The fund increases access to early-stage capital and provides specialized assistance to existing mid-sized and large technology and life sciences businesses.
An agenda of events during "Life Sciences Week" is attached. For information on the Edison Innovation Fund, WIRED initiatives, other financial incentives or state events planned during the week, contact Pamela McClure at the New Jersey Commerce Commission, 609.292.2523 or Nicole Royle at the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, 609.292.8691.
