Step 8 - Register Your Business for Tax and Employer Purposes
Depending on your business structure, after you register your business's name with the County Clerk or file your original business certificate, you must register your business with the State of New Jersey Division of Revenue for tax/employer purposes. This registration must be completed

If you operate as a sole proprietorship or general partnershipand will have no employees, you will be filing your business taxes under your social security number. If you will have employees, you must obtain and file your business taxes under a federal tax ID number.

If you operate a business entity such as a corporation or LLC and/or will have employees, you must obtain and file your business taxes under a federal tax ID number, (FEIN). You will be filing your business taxes, both state and federal, under this number.

PLEASE NOTE: Even if you have only a single employee, you are required to address employer insurance obligations relating to Unemployment and Disability Insurance and Workers' Compensation.

How to Register Your Business for Tax and Employer Purposes
To register online with the NJ Division of Revenue, access our Online Tax/Employer Registration Service. This service will enable you to register your business for New Jersey taxes, and for employer contributions for unemployment and disability. If you need a federal tax identification number (FEIN), the online service allows you to access the Internal Revenue Service’s online application form automatically. In addition, if you are registering a business entity such as a corporation or LLC, the service automatically links information from your original New Jersey business certificate with your application for the federal ID.

You may opt to register by using a paper form. To view, download, and/or print the registration form and information, choose
New Jersey Complete Registration Package with Instructions [pdf 2mb].

When you have completed the NJ Tax Registration form,

  • you will be registered with the Departments of Revenue, Labor, and Taxation;
  • your business will be registered for taxes and for employer contributions for unemployment and disability if appropriate; and
  • the State will send you the forms and information you will need for compliance with New Jersey tax laws.
