NJDOE Receives Grant for International Education
The Longview Foundation recently awarded the Office of Academic and Professional Standards $15,000 to support a new K-12 international education project.
The International Education and Resource Network (iEARN-USA), experts in online international project-based learning, is partnering with the Department of Education on this initiative.
The primary goal of the project is to provide professional development to teachers on how to integrate online project work into their classrooms with schools worldwide. More specifically, professional development will focus on the technical, collaborative, and organizational skills required to participate in a global and internet-based learning environment.
“Since Fall 2005 a growing number of teachers have expressed interest in using online technologies to infuse international/global education into their classrooms,” said Janis Jensen, New Jersey Coordinator of World Languages and International Education. “We are very excited about this opportunity.”
The project will culminate with a New Jersey International Education Technology Showcase in late spring 2007 where teachers will have the opportunity to share online international projects they have designed during the school year.
This is the third international education-related award that the department has received from the Longview Foundation. Longview also provided funding for the 2004 New Jersey International Summit and the fall 2005 International Education Regional Discussion and Awareness Forums.
The foundation has also partially funded the development of the Guide for Incorporating International Knowledge and Skills into New Jersey’s Core Curriculum, which will be released in January 2007.
The Guide will serve as a curriculum planning tool for K-12 teachers and school districts to further the state’s vision for international education: to help students understand and act on global issues by integrating international perspectives into the curriculum.
