Program Description
Work First New Jersey is the state's welfare program. It provides temporary cash assistance and many other support services to families through the TANF program and also provides cash benefits and support services to individuals and couples with no dependent children through our General Assistance program. WFNJ clients may receive Emergency Assistance benefits in certain situations, including but not limited to shelter and housing-related expenses. Eligible persons include those who are homeless or at immediate risk of becoming homeless, and those who have experienced a substantial loss of housing, food, clothing, or household furnishings due to fire, flood, ot similar disaster.

If the client is not already working full time, WFNJ requires him or her to participate in an approved work activity and/or look for work.
