Raritan, N.J. - New Jersey State Police Fugitive Unit members, working with the US Marshals Task Force, arrested a Raritan Township man who formulated a plot to help a death row inmate escape from a Tennessee prison.

Detectives received information from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations that Donald J. Kohut Jr., 34, of Raritan, N.J., a fugitive from Tennessee, was believed to be residing in Raritan Township.

On February, 13, 2012, a warrant was issued for Kohut's arrest for Conspiracy to Commit Escape from a Penal Institution and Conspiracy to Bribe a Public Servant. Kohut, who had established a relationship with a female death row inmate in Tennessee, was believed to be in the process of formulating a plan to help her escape from prison. During the planning phases of his operation, Kohut bribed correctional officials in that state.

Yesterday, March, 20, 2012, Fugitive Unit members along with members of the US Marshals New York/ New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office, and the Raritan Township Police Department arrested Kohut at his Raritan Township residence.

Kohut was charged with being a Fugitive From Justice and was later lodged in the Hunterdon County Jail on a no bail warrant. He is currently awaiting extradition back to Tennessee.
