State Police Make Arrest in I-80 Murder Investigation

Newark, N.J. – After a month-long investigation, detectives from the New Jersey State Police Major Crime Unit and the Bergen County Prosecutors Office arrested two individuals in the Interstate 80 homicide investigation of Jeff Mansilla, 39, of Hackensack N.J.

Mujahideen Abdullah, 25, of Newark, and Jomaris Gonzalez, 28, of Newark, were arrested yesterday morning after a search warrant was executed at the couple’s Newark residence. The arrests are the culmination of an investigation involving the New Jersey State Police Major Crime Unit with assistance from the Belleville Police Department as well as the Bergen and Essex County Prosecutors Office.

On Thursday June 12, 2014, Mansilla visited Wet, a club in Bellville, N.J. While at the club, Mansilla, Abdullah and Gonzalez were involved in a dispute. At approximately 2:00 a.m. Mansilla left the club with a man and a woman in his 2013 black GMC Yukon. Abdullah and Gonzalez proceeded to enter their own vehicle, a silver Infiniti, and followed the Yukon. At approximately 2:10 a.m., while driving eastbound on Interstate 80, Abdullah, pulled up alongside the driver’s side of the victim’s vehicle, retrieved a semi-automatic weapon from his waistband, and fired several shots into the Yukon through the open passenger side window, striking Mansilla in the hip.

After being shot, Mansilla was able to drive his vehicle off of the highway and switch positions with his male passenger. The man drove to Hackensack University Hospital with Mansilla in the front, passenger seat.  Mansilla was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.

Abdullah was charged with murder, distribution of controlled dangerous substances, weapons possession, and hindering apprehension. Gonzalez was charged with hindering apprehension and distribution of controlled dangerous substances.

The following New Jersey State Police units were involved in the investigation: Major Crime Unit, T.E.A.M.S. North Unit, Troop “B” Criminal Investigation Office, Crime Scene Investigations North Unit, and the Canine Unit.

Abdullah and Gonzalez are being lodged at Bergen County Jail. Abdullah is being held on $2,000,000 full cash bail while Gonzalez is being held on $250,000 full cash bail.

Charges are merely accusations and the suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty.
