spacer Mobile data computer inside a patrol car

The use of mobile data computers in the roadside environment is the fastest emerging technology tool to assist law enforcement.

Thousands of patrol vehicles throughout New Jersey are already equipped with computers.

The New Jersey State Police is in the midst of deploying mobile data computers to outfit marked and semi-marked (stealth) vehicles.

The complexity of integrating the components onto the vehicle while avoiding the "clutter" has been very challenging.

The uses of this technology are only limited by the imaginantion and cost factors.

Identification of suspect or missing/unidentified people can be readily accomplished in the roadside environment. This will assist law enforcement in ridding the streets of fugitives that may previously have gone undetected.

Some of the services / uses of this technology are:

  • Compatibility with NCIC 2000 fingerprint and mugshot enhanced capabilities
  • Identification and location of missing children
  • Increased Computer Aided Dispatch functionality
  • Automated Vehicle Location (AVL)
  • Automated data collection used with bar-coded driver's license and registration
  • Mapping for directions to motorists and incident / site locations
  • Increased public safety communications between agencies
  • Incident command cooridination through integrated video
  • Increased information availability with decreased operator intervention
