What is VOAD?
VOAD stands for "Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster."
It is a group of voluntary agencies that collaborate to organize their
responses to disaster. VOADs exist at the national, state, and county
levels.
- What
is the mission of the NJ Secure Corps (NJSC)?
The NJ Secure Corps is dedicated to serving the security needs of New
Jersey, primarily through partnerships with the NJVOAD and the NJOEM
(NJ Office of Emergency Management).
- Where
are NJSC members deployed?
Members are deployed throughout the counties of New Jersey, serving
their respective county VOADs through various agencies, such as county
offices of emergency management, county departments of human services,
American Red Cross chapters, United Way chapters, and food banks. The
NJSC team leader works from the office of the NJ Commission on National
and Community Service.
- How does
the NJSC interact with the state and county VOADs?
NJ Secure Corps members serve as staff for their county VOADs and facilitate
networking between members of the VOADs. Members may be asked to chair
VOAD committees, develop resource databases, or take minutes at VOAD
meetings. County representatives may coordinate regional activities
for their VOADs.
- How did
the NJSC start?
The grant proposal for the establishment of the NJSC was submitted to
the Corporation for National and Community Service by the NJ Commission
on National and Community Service for funding from a special homeland
security grant. In the summer of 2003, the NJSC brought on its first
members in the counties of Mercer, Middlesex, Sussex, and Union.
