Division of Consumer Affairs Notice Under the Americans with Disabilities Act

In accordance with the requirements of Title II of the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990 ("ADA"), the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs (the "Division") will not discriminate against qualified individuals with disabilities on the basis of disability in the Division's services, programs or activities or concerning access to these services, programs or activities.

Effective Communication
The Division will, upon request, provide reasonable accommodations to individuals with disabilities through appropriate aid and services leading to effective communication, including but not limited to use of qualified sign language interpreters, documents in Braille, and other methods of making information and communications available to people who have speech, hearing or vision impairments. This includes making its online forms accessible to individuals with disabilities through use of the above or through other methods of accommodation.

Modifications to Policies and Procedures
The Division will make all reasonable modifications to policies and programs to ensure that people with disabilities have equal opportunity to enjoy and have access to all Division programs, services and activities. For example, individuals with service animals are welcomed in Division offices, even where pets are generally prohibited. In another example, in terms of making its online forms accessible to individuals with disabilities through use of the above or through other methods of accommodation, complaints can be taken over the phone and thereafter copied to the complainant.

Anyone who requires an auxiliary aid or service for access, effective communication, or modifications to policies or procedures to participate in a Division program, service or activity, should contact Division ADA Coordinator Maria Lugo, as soon as possible but no later than 48 hours before the scheduled event.

Complaints that a Division program, service, or activity is not accessible to persons with disabilities should be directed to Maria Lugo at (973) 792-4252 (voice), 1-800-852-7899 (TTY) or via email at lugom@dca.lps.state.nj.us or askconsumeraffairs@lps.state.nj.us or the ADA Coordinator for the Department of Law and Public Safety, Mary Jane Chiacchio (973) 292-2343 Mary-Jane.Chiacchio@lps.state.nj.us.

The Division will not place a surcharge on a particular individual with a disability or any group of individuals with disabilities to cover the cost of providing accessibility to these aforementioned services, programs or activities, auxiliary aids/services or reasonable modification of policy, such as retrieving items from location that are open to the public but are not accessible to person who use wheelchairs.
