New Continuing Professional Competency
Requirement Information

Professional Engineers

As a condition of renewal for the 2014-2016 biennial renewal period, professional engineers are required to obtain at least 24 continuing professional competency (C.P.C) credits, of which two shall be in professional practice ethics. Courses may have been taken between May 1, 2012 and April 30, 2014, to qualify. A new licensee, by way of examination, shall have all requirements waived for the first biennial renewal period in which the licensee obtained initial licensure. If you are exempt answer "yes" to the continuing education question on your renewal. A new licensee, by way of comity, shall be responsible for one C.P.C. credit for each month since the New Jersey license was issued. A maximum of 12 C.P.C. credits may be carried over into a succeeding biennial renewal period.

Land Surveyors

As a condition of renewal for the 2014-2016 biennial renewal period, professional land surveyors and dual licensees are required to obtain at least 24 C.P.C. credits for each biennial renewal period. A new licensee, by way of examination, shall have all requirements waived for the first biennial renewal period in which the licensee obtained initial licensure. If you are exempt answer "yes" to the continuing education question on your renewal. A new licensee, by way of comity, shall be responsible for one P.D.H. for each month since the New Jersey license was issued. A maximum of eight P.D.H.s may be carried over into a succeeding biennial renewal period.

Dual Licensees

As a condition of renewal for the 2014-2016 biennial renewal period, professional land surveyor and professional engineer dual licensees are required to obtain at least 36 C.P.C. credits relating to the practices of professional engineering and professional land surveying. At least 12 of the required 36 C.P.C. credits shall have been completed in professional land surveying and at least 12 C.P.C. credits shall have been completed in professional engineering, of which two C.P.C. credits shall have been in professional practice ethics. The remaining three C.P.C. credits may have been completed in either professional engineering or professional land surveying.

Note: Courses that have been completed in a U.S. regulatory jurisdiction outside of New Jersey may be applied toward New Jersey license renewal requirements. Do not submit course documentation with your renewal. The Board will conduct, at a later date, an audit of a random sampling of licensees.

A professional engineer may obtain the required C.P.C. credits from educational programs or from equivalent educational programs sponsored by Board-approved providers. All educational programs and equivalent educational programs sponsored by Board-approved providers that directly and materially relate to the practice of professional engineering with the clear purpose to maintain, improve or expand the skills and knowledge of the licensee relevant to the practice of professional engineering, are approved for credit. Courses required for initial licensure or that primarily involve practice building, practice management, or practice marketing are not approved. Courses from the following approved providers shall be acceptable to the Board: accredited schools, universities and colleges; national and state professional engineering and closely allied professional organizations; and federal, state, and New Jersey bi-state governmental agencies and independent authorities that sponsor C.P.C. courses or programs, and C.P.C. providers registered with the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying.
