The Elizabeth Day Program serves 20 youth that reside in either Hudson or Union County. These juveniles range in age from 14 to 18. Juveniles are picked up from their homes and transported to Essex Transitional in Newark, NJ. (Monday through Friday - 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
The vision of the Elizabeth Day Program is to help juveniles in the juvenile justice system by working to improve their self-esteem, assisting in the development of sense of self-worth, motivate them to work towards reaching obtainable goals, and providing needed support. Placement in Elizabeth Day Program requires the juvenile to be on probation with no pending charges, all charges must be adjudicated. Youth with sex offense and arson charges are not accepted into the program. The length of stay in the program for an adjudicated probationer is 6 to 8 months. An adjudicated probationer is subject to a monthly probation review with his or her probation officer and parent(s) to discuss his/her behavior.
Additionally, the juvenile has the opportunity to receive up to 15 days off his/her length of stay, if he/her complies with all components of the program and does not have additional charges. However, if the juvenile does not comply, he can have 15 days added to his length of stay.
The primary services provided by the Elizabeth Day staff include counseling, education, community service projects, family-life skills, work readiness, computer training, GED preparation, Aggression Replacement Training (ART), Social Work and Child Study Team services, cultural affairs components (where juvenile has a chance to attend museums, lectures and workshops), and Phoenix gang alternative program.
Each juvenile meets with the social worker upon entering the program. A Comprehensive Informational Assessment (CIA) is completed within 15 days and a Case Action Plan (CAP) is developed that will target reachable goals for each juvenile to complete while in the program. Elizabeth Day and probation have teamed up to provide the following community – based programs for juveniles from Union County; Proceeds Inc., Communities in Cooperation, Prevention Links, Families and Community Together, and Family and Children Services. As a collaborative effort, monthly meetings are held to review cases and create innovative steps for any juveniles that are returning to their communities in order to reduce their risk of being involved in a crime.
