Ocean County Woman Sentenced for Obtaining Drugs with Fictitious Prescription

TRENTON - Vaughn L. McKoy, Director, Division of Criminal Justice, announced today that an Ocean County woman has been sentenced for using stolen prescription blanks to illegally obtain controlled dangerous substances.

According to Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Greta Gooden-Brown, Julianne O’Brien, 42, Marine Road, Waretown, Ocean County, was sentenced to eighteen months probation and ordered to pay $368 in restitution to Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield. O’Brien was sentenced by Ocean County Superior Court Judge Edward J. Turnbach on April 1. O’Brien pleaded guilty to a criminal Accusation which charged her with fraudulently obtaining a controlled dangerous substance.

In pleading guilty on Feb. 14, O’Brien admitted that in March, 2002, while working for a dentist, she stole a pad of prescription drug blank forms and used the pad to write prescriptions for Vicoprofen, a controlled dangerous substance. An investigation by the Division of Criminal Justice - Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor determined that O’Brien had the prescriptions filled at The Medicap Pharmacy located in Barnegat, Ocean County. In addition, the Accusation charged that O’Brien’s health insurance company, Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield, paid $368 for the illegally obtained prescription drugs.

The investigation was conducted by the Division of Criminal Justice - Office of the Insurance Fraud Prosecutor which investigates and prosecutes civil and criminal insurance fraud cases. State Investigator Weldon Powell and Deputy Attorney General Peter W. Lee were assigned to the investigation. DAG Lee represented the Division of Criminal Justice - Office of Insurance Fraud Prosecutor at the sentencing hearing.
