On
Friday, June, 17th from 9:30am to 12:00pm,
New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey
will host a forum for the public, law
enforcement representatives and election
officials to discuss voter rights and
responsibilities for ex-felons. The forum
will be held at the Music Auditorium,
College of New Jersey, 2000 Pennington
Road in Ewing, New Jersey.
The
forum is part of the State’s continuing
voter education and outreach to encourage
qualified citizens to participate in the
election process. The forum is part of
the “Be
Powerful, Be Heard” initiative
developed by the office of the Attorney
General as a result of the “Help
America Vote Act of 2002." The “Be
Powerful, Be Heard” initiative is
designed to improve voter outreach.
By
New Jersey law, ex-felons are eligible
to vote; after completing their sentences,
and if they are no longer incarcerated,
on probation, or on parole. This forum
will discuss the law and answer questions
about the rights of ex-felons to participate
in the voting process.
The
forum will include a panel discussion
and questions and answers. Participants
include Harvey; Markus Green, Chief of
Staff of the Office of the Attorney General;
Assemblyman Alfred E. Steele; Debbie Mukamal,
Director, Prisoner Reentry Institute,
John Jay College of Criminal Justice,
the City University of New York; Thomas
James, Director of Division of Parole,
New Jersey State Parole Board; Nancy Fishman,
Administrator, New Jersey Institute for
Social Justice; Howard Beyer, Executive
Director, Juvenile Justice Commission;
Zenon Quiles; and Carmen Casciano, Essex
County Superintendent of Elections; and
Zenon Quiles.
