Hip-Hop artists Doug E. Fresh, Jim Jones, Freeway, Jha Jha of the Diplomats, The Game; America’s Top Model Tocarra Jones and Def poets Lemon, Black Ice and Kamilah Forbes, producer of the “Def Poetry Jam on Broadway” and “Def Poetry Jam” on HBO, as well as 15 high school and college finalists from a statewide spoken competition about voting, will participate in a panel discussion with music at the Sovereign Bank Arena. They will be joined by New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey, Russell Simmons, Reverend Run of Run DMC and Dr. Ben Chavis of the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network.

The discussion will stress the importance of voting to more than 6,000 New Jersey high school and college students and students in classrooms statewide via live web streaming at the “BE POWERFUL, BE HEARD – VOTE NEW JERSEY” HIP-HOP Summit II, in preparation for the state’s gubernatorial election on November 8. More than 2,000 high school and college students and others attended last year’s Summit, co-hosted by the Office of the Attorney General and Division of Elections and Russell Simmons Hip-Hop Summit Action Network.

"BE POWERFUL, BE HEARD" is the public outreach component and slogan of New Jersey’s voter education initiative and includes Public Service Announcements, college bus tours, and other voter registration and get out the vote efforts. The "BE POWERFUL, BE HEARD" initiative is a comprehensive approach to voter education and voting that contributed to a record number of registered voters - more than 460,000 in the 2004 presidential election, bringing New Jersey’s number of voters to more than five million for the first time in state history.
