TRENTON
— Attorney General Peter C. Harvey
and Vaughn L. McKoy, Director, Division
of Criminal Justice, announced that the
Division of Criminal Justice and the Trenton
Narcotics Task Force has combined resources
to target illegal drug distribution and
street-level narcotics trafficking operating
throughout the City of Trenton by obtaining
State Grand Jury indictments against four
individuals on charges related to the
distribution and possession of cocaine
and other illegal drugs.
“These
indictments send a loud and clear message
that the Division of Criminal Justice
and the Trenton Narcotics Task Force is
tracking the activities of illegal drug
operations, drug traffickers, and gang
members in our Capitol city,” said
Attorney General Harvey. “The full
weight of New Jersey’s law enforcement
community has been dispatched to combat
illegal drug trafficking, including the
resources of the Division of Criminal
Justice, the Trenton Police Department,
and federal, state, county, and local
law enforcement agencies. New Jersey police
and prosecutors will continue joint investigations
and ‘round-the-clock’ efforts
to investigate and prosecute drug traffickers
and gangs operating in New Jersey.”
According to Criminal Justice Director
McKoy, four separate State Grand Jury
indictments charged four Trenton residents
with distribution of a controlled dangerous
substance, distribution of a controlled
dangerous substance within 1,000 feet
of school property, possession with intent
to distribute a controlled dangerous substance,
and/or possession of a controlled dangerous
substance. The State Grand Jury indictments
result from investigations conducted by
State Investigators assigned to the Division
of Criminal Justice, representatives of
the Trenton Police Department, and Deputy
Attorney’s General from the Division
of Criminal Justice - Major Narcotics
Bureau.
A State Grand Jury indictment charged
Sean Hagins, a/k/a “Face,”
34, 230 Spring St., Trenton, Mercer County,
with possession with intent to distribute
a controlled dangerous substance, possession
with intent to distribute a controlled
dangerous substance within 1,000 feet
of school property, and possession with
intent to distribute a controlled dangerous
substance within 500 feet of public property.
According to the indictment, State Investigators
assigned to the Division of Criminal Justice
developed information that Hagins was
allegedly selling crack cocaine in the
area of Jackson Street and South Broad
Street in Trenton. The indictment charges
that on Jan. 15, 2004, Hagins sold in
excess of three grams of cocaine to undercover
State Investigators. It is charged that
the drug transaction took place within
1,000 feet of the Parker School Annex.
At the time of Hagen’s arrest on
Jan. 15, State Investigators confiscated
$1,359. If convicted on all counts, Hagins
faces up to 10 years in state prison and
a fine of up to $150,000.
A second State Grand Jury indictment charged
Raymond Brooks, 37, 198 Rosemont Ave.,
Trenton, Mercer County, with possession
with intent to distribute a controlled
dangerous substance, possession with intent
to distribute a controlled dangerous substance
within 1,000 feet of school property,
and possession with intent to distribute
a controlled dangerous substance within
500 feet of public property. The investigation
by the Trenton Narcotics Task Force developed
confidential information that Brooks was
allegedly distributing cocaine and marijuana
from his Rosemont Avenue residence. The
indictment alleges that on April 7, 2005,
State Investigators, after executing a
search warrant at 198 Rosemont Ave., confiscated
marijuana, narcotics paraphernalia, and
$1,305 in cash. Brooks faces up to 10
years in state prison and a fine of up
to $150,000 if convicted on all charges.
A nine-count State Grand Jury indictment
charged Duren Michael Funderburg, 26,
164 Monmouth St., Trenton, Mercer County,
with multiple counts of distribution of
a controlled dangerous substance, distribution
of a controlled dangerous substance within
1,000 feet of school property, distribution
of a controlled dangerous substance within
500 feet of public property, possession
with intent to distribute a controlled
dangerous substance, possession with intent
to distribute a controlled dangerous substance
within 1,000 feet of school property,
and possession with intent to distribute
a controlled dangerous substance within
500 feet of public property. The indictment
alleges that State Investigators from
the Division of Criminal Justice developed
information that Funderburg “controlled”
the heroin trade in the Lamberton Street
area of Trenton. Undercover State Investigators
made two street-level purchases of heroin
from Funderburg on June 26, 2003. The
drug transactions took place within 1,000
feet of the Parker Elementary School and
within 500 feet of the New Lamberton playground.
At the time of Funderburg’s arrest,
State Investigators confiscated a quantity
of heroin and $3,778 in cash. If convicted,
Funderburg faces up to 10 years in state
prison and fines up to $150,000.
The fourth State Grand Jury indictment
charged Johnny McCants, 23, 1213 Town
Court, Lawrenceville, Mercer County, with
possession with intent to distribute a
controlled dangerous substance and possession
of a controlled dangerous substance. The
indictment charges that on Sept. 9, 2004,
undercover State Investigators attempted
to negotiate a purchase of cocaine from
McCants. At the time of the Sept. 9 arrest,
State Investigators confiscated a quantity
of cocaine, drug paraphernalia and $1,648
in cash. McCants faces up to five years
in state prison and a fine of up to $75,000
upon any conviction.
The State Grand Jury indictments were
handed up to Mercer County Superior Court
Judge Linda R. Feinberg on Oct. 12. The
defendants will be ordered to appear in
Mercer County Superior Court for arraignment
and bail. The cases were presented to
the State Grand Jury by Deputy Attorney
General Frank M. Gennaro assigned to the
Division of Criminal Justice - Major Narcotics
Bureau. An indictment represents an accusation.
The defendants are presumed innocent unless
or until proven guilty in a court of law.
