NEWARK
- The Attorney General’s Shooting
Response Team is conducting an investigation
into the circumstances surrounding a shooting
incident in which a state correction officer
fatally wounded a man in Newark last night.
According
to the preliminary investigation, Newark
police officers were detailed at 9:37 p.m.
to a report of a shooting outside the home
of Senior Correction Officer Eugene W. Braswell
in the first block of Grand Avenue in Newark.
Police arrived to find a 34-year-old man
with multiple gunshot wounds lying on the
driveway of the home. The man was pronounced
dead at the scene. The deceased man’s
name is not being released at this time
pending notification of relatives. Braswell,
28, who is assigned to Northern State Prison,
had a gunshot wound to his left ankle. He
was treated at University Hospital and later
released.
The
preliminary investigation by the Attorney
General’s Shooting Response Team has
determined that Braswell was sitting on
his porch with a woman when the second man
walked past. After passing Braswell’s
location, the man returned a short time
later, walking toward Braswell from the
opposite direction. The man produced a silver-colored
9 mm semi-automatic handgun and fired at
least one round at Braswell, striking him
in the left ankle. Braswell returned fire
with his own .40-caliber handgun, striking
the other man twice, including once in the
neck. A 9 mm handgun and a single spent
9 mm shell were recovered at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation
by the Shooting Response Team and no further
information is being released at this time.
Under
an Attorney General Directive, members of
the Attorney General’s Shooting Response
Team, including Deputy Attorneys General,
state investigators from the Division of
Criminal Justice and detectives from the
State Police Major Crime Unit, are dispatched
to the scene to conduct the investigation.
The Shooting Response Team also receives
investigative and administrative support
from county prosecutors’ offices.
In this case, the Essex County Prosecutor’s
Office is assisting in the ongoing investigation,
and the Newark Police Department also provided
assistance.
