TRENTON
– Attorney General Anne Milgram and
Criminal Justice Director Gregory A. Paw
announced that a man and a woman from Trenton
were indicted today for an alleged insurance
fraud.
According
to Insurance Fraud Prosecutor Greta Gooden
Brown, Ramsey Naylor, 30, and Carrie Martin,
26, both of Trenton, were indicted on third-degree
charges of insurance fraud and attempted
theft by deception. Naylor was also charged
with third-degree tampering with public
records or information and fourth-degree
uttering a forged document.
According
to Paw, the Mercer County grand jury indictment
alleges that between Sept. 21, 2003 and
Jan. 23, 2004, Naylor submitted a fraudulent
insurance claim to Rider Insurance Company
for the theft of a 2003 Yamaha motorcycle.
The claim falsely reported that the motorcycle
was stolen after an insurance policy had
been purchased for it. It is alleged that
the motorcycle, in fact, was stolen before
it was covered by an insurance policy. It
is further alleged that Martin provided
information she knew was false in support
of the claim. Naylor allegedly submitted
a falsified police report concerning the
date of the theft of the motorcycle.
Third-degree
crimes carry a maximum punishment of five
years in state prison and a criminal fine
of $15,000, while fourth-degree crimes carry
a maximum punishment of 18 months in state
prison and a fine of $10,000. The defendants
may also face civil insurance fraud fines.
The
indictment was handed up today in Superior
Court in Mercer County. The indictment is
merely an accusation and the defendants
are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
State
Investigator Lisa Egan and Deputy Attorney
General Joseph J. Egan, Jr. were assigned
to the investigation. Deputy Attorney General
Egan presented the case to the grand jury.
This
case was referred to OIFP by the Special
Investigative Unit of Rider Insurance Company,
which initially uncovered the fraud and
assisted OIFP in the investigation. Insurance
Fraud Prosecutor Brown thanks Rider for
their assistance in this matter.
