Trenton,
NJ – Voter registration figures have
climbed by 48,000 people since the November
6 general election in advance of the February
5 presidential primary election, with a
total of 4,844,213 residents eligible to
cast ballots in the Republican and Democratic
party contests.
However,
compared to the last presidential primary
election in June 2004, statewide voter registration
is up more than 221,000.
The
new statewide figures follow the close of
registration on January 15 for the February
5 primary election.
A
total of 1,170,644 voters are registered
Democrats; 874,752 are registered Republicans,
and another 2,798,817 are unaffiliated voters,
who are also eligible to vote in either
the Democratic or Republican contests. They
can declare their affiliation at the polls
on Primary Day. (Another 1,634 voters are
registered as members of the Green, Libertarian,
Natural Law, Reform, or U.S. Constitution
parties and are not eligible to vote in
the primary.)
The
February 5 primary election is only for
selecting the Democratic and Republican
candidates for president. Democratic primary
voters will also choose district delegates
for the party’s nominating convention.
There are no Republican delegate contests
on the Feb. 5 ballot. The Republican delegates
will be selected in the June 3 primary election,
when primary voters will also select the
major party nominees for Congress and county
and municipal offices.
The
polls will be open February 5 from 6 a.m.
to 8 p.m. Any eligible voter can also choose
to vote by absentee ballot, and absentee
ballots can be applied for in the mail by
Tuesday, January 29, or in person at county
clerks’ office up to 3 p.m. February
4, the day before the primary election.
Completed absentee ballots must be received
by county boards of elections by 8 p.m.
on Primary Day.
