Trenton, NJ – Voter registration figures have climbed by 48,000 people since the November 6 general election in advance of the February 5 presidential primary election, with a total of 4,844,213 residents eligible to cast ballots in the Republican and Democratic party contests.

However, compared to the last presidential primary election in June 2004, statewide voter registration is up more than 221,000.

The new statewide figures follow the close of registration on January 15 for the February 5 primary election.

A total of 1,170,644 voters are registered Democrats; 874,752 are registered Republicans, and another 2,798,817 are unaffiliated voters, who are also eligible to vote in either the Democratic or Republican contests. They can declare their affiliation at the polls on Primary Day. (Another 1,634 voters are registered as members of the Green, Libertarian, Natural Law, Reform, or U.S. Constitution parties and are not eligible to vote in the primary.)

The February 5 primary election is only for selecting the Democratic and Republican candidates for president. Democratic primary voters will also choose district delegates for the party’s nominating convention. There are no Republican delegate contests on the Feb. 5 ballot. The Republican delegates will be selected in the June 3 primary election, when primary voters will also select the major party nominees for Congress and county and municipal offices.

The polls will be open February 5 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Any eligible voter can also choose to vote by absentee ballot, and absentee ballots can be applied for in the mail by Tuesday, January 29, or in person at county clerks’ office up to 3 p.m. February 4, the day before the primary election. Completed absentee ballots must be received by county boards of elections by 8 p.m. on Primary Day.

A county chart of voter registration figures, absentee ballot applications, and a list of county clerk’s offices can be found on the Division of Elections website at www.NJelections.org.
